Family, Consumer and Human Development, aka the "Mom Major." I have heard this one so many times, and I have also made the joke myself. People refer to this major as the mom major, and that isn't entirely wrong...
I will graduate in less than a month with my BS in Family, Consumer and Human Development with three emphases, child development, human development and family & community services.
I have learned about...
human development from conception to death.
teaching family life education.
teaching at a preschool or younger level.
infant development all the way through middle childhood, adolescence.
abuse and neglect, marriage and family, balancing work and family, family finance.
family crisis and intervention.
social work, parenting, culture and diversity, speech and hearing
ASL and for kicks and giggles... Sewing.
I been a part of infant lab, middle childhood lab and preschool student teaching.
I have seen the research and I have applied the research.
I have fallen in LOVE with early childhood and families. I have pursued areas of this on my own through continuing education. I absolutely love the ages birth until adolescence.
I am qualified to work with people ranging from birth until death in a "helping others" field. I am aware of research, and it's application. I have a wide variety of education, that will help me in any career. I have a wide variety of education that will help me in my personal family life as well. Along with the education I have gained experience (Autistic preschool, a home-based child care center, an infant toddler classroom, a three-year old classroom and as a youth counselor for a summer camp program)
I love Utah State because of the great education I have received and the hands-on application through all of my years here.
And yes, this is the mom major.
When I was little, I would always say, "When I grow up, I want to be a mom." That statement cannot ring more true today. I not only want to be a mom, I want to help other moms and other families with my education. This degree has helped me to do that already, and it's not even on paper yet.
Because of this degree, I will make a difference in families.
Because of this degree, I will make a kick butt mom!!! I will still fail over and over... but I have the first thing you need to be an awesome mom, a LOVE for children.
Because of this degree, I will reevaluate my life over and over, to progress and be better.
Just because FCHD is sometimes referred to as the mom major,
doesn't mean it's any less valuable.
I am proud to be graduating with this degree.
This degree is EXACTLY what I want.
I have an education, in more than just motherhood.
I have an education in families and development.
I have an education in working with people from many backgrounds.
I have an education and an open-mind to many practices and principles.
I wouldn't be graduating next month without my Heavenly Father.
When I had a plan for my life.
It changed. And it changed. And it changed.
I was humbled many times.
And God led me to this degree.
I have gained life-long relationships from switching to this major.
I have developed a deeper passion for children and helping families.
God is good.
Remember, your plan is not always His plan.
The plan is going to change again and again.
So, here, I look forward with faith
on my new adventures that await.
